First Time Owning Chickens? These 4 FAQs Should Help!

rear roll out nest box Although running a chicken coop can be exciting and a lot of fun, there is certainly a tremendous amount of work involved. Don't be one of those chicken owners who barely spends any time out in the yard and virtually ignores all the hens. It's important that you are involved and take excellent care of your chickens, your eggs, and your entire property.

If you're a first time chicken owner, you probably have a lot of questions. That's understandable, because it's such a major commitment. So hopefully these few common questions about running your own chicken coup can help you prepare for a successful and stress free summer.
  1. How often do chickens eat? -- Typically, chickens will consume between about four and six ounces of fetch each day. During the cooler months, however, you should expect that number to increase as the hens will have to eat more meals to stay energized and stay warm. Consequently, your hens will most likely cut back on the amount of feed they will need during the summer months.
  2. When do chickens begin laying eggs? -- Hens usually start laying eggs when they are around 5 months old and will lay between 200 to 300 eggs each year. Depending on the type of chicken breed you have, some hens will lay fewer eggs and vice versa.
  3. Where should I keep the chickens? -- Your best bet is to keep chickens in a high quality chicken nesting box. There are a few options here for you to consider, but one of the best types of nesting areas is the rear roll out nest box offered by Best Nest Box.
  4. What should I keep inside the roll out nest box -- Nothing!  Everything you and your chicken need is provided with a Best Nest Box.  Visit our FAQ page to find nest box training tips.
